Nido

2 months - 18 months
Nido, which is the earliest form of Montessori education, is designed for infants. Nido means “nest” in Italian, capturing the idea of warmth and security. The purpose of Nido in Montessori school settings is to create a calm, cozy, and home-like environment for the youngest students.

Learning Outcomes

  • Purposeful Movement: Physical milestones – fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and hand-eye coordination
  • Life Skills: Moving from a bottle or nursing to self-feeding with real, small utensils; a safe place for toilet learning to begin; initial development, confidence and independence
  • Language Development: Language saturated environment (speech and print), emphasis on vocabulary development; the environment encourages infants to express needs before verbal language is fully formed.

Program Highlights

  • Developmentally appropriate furniture and materials
    • Specially designed furniture and materials support children’s independence and encourage exploration and movement.
  • Warm and caring interactions between teachers and children
    • Peaceful routines and consistent care encourage feelings of security that allow infants to feel safe to explore.
  • Language rich environment
    • Conversations, songs, reading experiences, and vocabulary saturation support language development.

The Montessori Difference

Features
Traditional Setting
Family Star Montessori
Sleeping
Fixed crib that limits independence, adult schedules vs. infant schedules
Floor beds that allow infants to follow individual needs for sleeping and waking. Able to rejoin activities independently when they wake.
Movement
Equipment that restricts a child’s movement.
Freedom of movement. We allow children to explore their physical limits safely. The classroom is prepared to allow even non-mobile learners to participate in self-directed learning.
Prepared Environment
Bright, primary colors and high-volume plastic toys.
Homelike and serene. Neutral, soft tones and natural materials focus the infant’s attention on their own development. Montessori classrooms are designed with calm colors, open spaces, and organized materials to support focus and peace.
