Supporting Every Child: Montessori and IEPs in the Primary Classroom

Back to All

For families navigating an Individualized Education Program (IEP), finding the right school environment can feel overwhelming. You’re not just looking for a place where your child is supported—you’re looking for a place where they are understood, where their strengths are seen, and where their growth is nurtured with intention and care. At Family Star, that work happens every day within our authentic Montessori classrooms, guided closely by our Mental Health and Disabilities Manager and a deeply collaborative team.

Montessori and IEPs are often thought of as separate approaches, but in practice, they align in meaningful ways. Montessori education is built around individualized learning, careful observation, and meeting each child where they are. In a Primary classroom, children move at their own pace, choosing work that matches their developmental stage while teachers guide, adapt, and support as needed. For a child with an IEP, this allows for differentiation in a way that feels natural and inclusive, rather than separate or stigmatizing.

At the center of this work is our Mental Health and Disabilities Manager, who partners closely with teachers, families, and specialists to ensure each child’s IEP is implemented thoughtfully and effectively. Rather than a checklist, the IEP becomes a living, responsive plan that evolves with the child. Observations from the classroom, input from families, and collaboration with external providers all come together to create a consistent and supportive approach.

What this looks like in practice:

  • Individualized support embedded into the daily classroom experience—not pulled out or isolated
  • Ongoing collaboration between teachers, families, specialists, and our Mental Health and Disabilities Manager
  • Real-time observation and adjustment based on each child’s progress and needs
  • Consistent communication to ensure alignment between school and home
  • A focus on the whole child, including social-emotional development, not just academic goals

Within the classroom, Montessori materials and practices provide unique benefits for children with a wide range of learning needs. The hands-on, sensory-based materials allow children to engage concepts in concrete ways, supporting understanding and retention. The structured yet flexible environment offers predictability while still allowing for choice, which can be especially helpful for children who benefit from routine and clear expectations. Social-emotional development is also woven throughout the day, helping children build confidence, independence, and strong peer relationships.

Equally important is the role of the teacher. Montessori guides are trained to observe deeply and respond intentionally, adjusting lessons, pacing, and support based on what each child needs. This allows interventions to happen naturally within the flow of the classroom, so children with IEPs can access learning alongside their peers in a community that values their growth and contributions.

For families, this approach often feels different in the best way. Communication is ongoing and collaborative, with a shared focus on the whole child. With our Mental Health and Disabilities Manager helping to lead this work, families have a consistent partner who understands both the clinical and classroom perspectives, ensuring that support is cohesive and meaningful.

Montessori does not replace the need for an IEP, but it creates an environment where that plan can truly come to life. It offers space for children to grow at their own pace, tools that meet them where they are, and relationships that support them along the way. For children with IEPs, that can make all the difference—not just in what they learn, but in how they experience themselves as learners and members of a community.
